When you say Na Bulovce ...

In the middle of the year 2006, specifically on 21st June, the Prague Faculty Hospital Na Bulovce celebrated it 75th birthday. In the following paragraphs, we will remind us of what changes the hospital has experienced during the three quarters of a century of its existence and what preceded its establishment.

History until 1931

When the Czech King Charles IV issued a decree establishing vineyards within the area of three miles from Prague, he had no idea that he would indirectly contribute to the name of the hospital which was founded about six centuries later. One of the owners of the vineyards was Earl Bernard Bulle from Bullenau who settled down north of Prague on a hill which has since been known to the citizens of Prague as Bulovka. He built a baroque manor house which later served also as a military hospital. After the war, it served as an education facility for uncontrollable children of the citizens of Prague.

Liben experienced a rapid industrial development. New plants and works were established, required more and more workforce and better infrastructure. At the same time, the population was growing significantly and most people lived in working-class colonies. The hygiene conditions in these settlements resulted in a rapid increase in the number of ill people, particularly due to spreading infections. The small infection hospital with twenty beds which had been operating in the area of former vineyard Bulovka since 1896 could have not prevented this situation. After the accession of Liben to Prague in 1902, the even more obvious lack of beds in the health care facility led the Prague councillors and presbyteries to an extreme decision. At the ceremonial meeting of the Prague presbyteries on 18th October 1910, they reached the decision to build a new hospital on the south-eastern side of Bulovka. The original plans included several pavilions connected by corridors and a tunnel, with the total capacity of about 360 beds. The technical support and a certain degree of independence should have been provided by an electricity pavilion, boiler room, laundry room, kitchen and own laboratories.

However, these intentions were severely disrupted by the World War I. In 1915, the construction of the infection pavilion with 160 beds was finished and other works were suspended. Nevertheless, the providence with which the new hospital was built, was evident in a short time. The new infection pavilion managed to provide not only health care, but above all the necessary isolation of infected patients.

After the end of the World War I and constitution of Prague as the capital of Czechoslovakia, the increasing number of citizens led to a reconsideration of the issue of Bulovka hospital. Within a very short time, preparations for the construction of a completely new medical facility were started. The facility was supposed to be one of the most modern hospitals in Europe in terms of its architecture, medical procedures and technical equipment. The construction started in 1925 according to the project of the head Prague physicist MUDr. Ladislav Prochazka and professor MUDr. Karel Hynek. The construction was sponsored by the Construction Office, Prague. Within six years, the hospital was finished from the main part including all service operations and an accommodation building for staff and was officially passed on to the citizens of Prague.

History after 1931

The hospital Bulovka was inaugurated on 21st June 1931. The ceremony was attended by a number of important guests headed by the mayor of Prague JUDr. Karel Baxa accompanied by ministers, many great doctors and other experts. They all had the opportunity to admire the new health facility which was unique not only due to its technical equipment or staff. With its 765 beds, the new hospital was able to provide complex and highly professional health care while extending the scope of its activities gradually. For example, it established the first specialised urology department in Czechoslovakia and, a year later, the Tuberculosis Institute associated with the Charles University was established in the tuberculosis pavilion.

The original capacity became insufficient very soon due to an increasing number of patients and a further expansion of the capacity to 900 beds was approved. A dermatovenerologic pavilion was established in 1936 and followed by an infection pavilion in 1940. The establishment of this department was led by professor MUDr. J. Prochazka, DrCs., who later worked as the chief of the department for many years. The expansion was finished after building the Department of Internal Medicine, the operation of which began in 1941.

The World War II was a real test also for the hospital staff. Many of the employees lived in their departments and were not allowed to leave without letting the chief doctors know. Nurses were not even allowed to get married. The working week had 56 working hours. Despite of these measures, the hospital was actively engaged in the revolt. During the occupation, many citizens were hiding in the facilities, and medicaments and medical materials were secretly sent to the revolt leaders. The hospital also provided help during the May Prague Revolt.

In connection with this period, the Bulovka hospital is written in the minds of our citizens in relation to the event which started the dark period of Czech history. On 27th May 1942, a group of parachutists committed assassination on imperial SS protector Reinhard Heydrich near the hospital. Immediately after the event, he was transported to the surgical department at Bulovka where he was treated by a team of doctors and nurses who were quickly transported from Berlin. Special measures were taken in the whole facility, the entry to the hospital was banned and the premises were controlled by hundreds of members of SS who were armed to the teeth. Despite of all these actions, Heydrich died of internal injuries and blood poisoning.

The unfortunate and sad period of occupation is now reminded to the hospital visitors not only by a memorial plaque, but also by the surgical pavilion named after MUDr. B. Budin who was tortured to death by Gestapo.

After World War II, hospital Bulovka continued in building its reputation as an excellent health facility and became one of our best hospitals. In 1952, this facility became a clinical base for training of doctors. At the same time, the Centre for clinical education in infectious diseases was established. One of the first infection clinics in Europe, which has been co-operating with all three medical faculties of Charles University up to the present day, started its operation in 1955. In 1978, the Orthopaedic Clinic came into operations in a new building and two years later, patients started to use a new gynaecological and obstetric pavilion. Due to the establishment of a close co-operation in training of doctors and the establishment of clinics, this health facility started to use its present name – the Faculty Hospital Na Bulovce.
